Post-Gum Surgery Care Instructions

After gum surgery, proper care is essential to ensure a smooth recovery and the success of your procedure. Follow these important post-operative care instructions closely:

  • Do not eat for about 3 hours after your treatment. Once you resume eating, maintain a soft diet for 2-3 days. Avoid alcohol, carbonated beverages, and hard or brittle foods that could harm the surgical site. Stay hydrated throughout your recovery period.
  • Take all prescribed antibiotics and medications as directed. Over-the-counter non-aspirin pain relievers may be used as needed to alleviate discomfort. If you experience a reaction to a medication, such as nausea, skin rash, or other unusual symptoms, stop taking the medication and contact our office immediately.
  • Slight bleeding or oozing for up to 48 hours after surgery is normal. If bleeding continues beyond this, apply a moistened gauze pad or tea bag to the area for 20 minutes at a time. Elevate your head during this process to reduce blood flow to the area. If bleeding does not stop, contact our office as soon as possible.
  • Swelling is common following gum surgery. Apply an ice pack or cold compress to the affected area at 15-minute intervals during the first 48 hours to minimize swelling.
  • Maintain excellent oral hygiene to support healing. Brush your teeth very lightly on the first night after surgery. You can resume gentle flossing the following day. Avoid using oral irrigation devices, such as Waterpiks, until you receive clearance from our dentist.
  • Finally, refrain from smoking for at least 48 hours after your surgery. Smoking can interfere with healing and increase the risk of complications.

If you have any questions or concerns about your recovery, contact our office to schedule a follow-up or speak with our team directly.
