Post-Tooth Extraction Care Essential Healing Tips

After having a tooth extracted, you will enter an initial healing period of 1-2 weeks. Swelling and discomfort are common for the first 48 hours following your procedure.

To ensure proper healing, we recommend that you:

  • Avoid chewing for 2 hours or until the anesthetic has completely worn off

  • Apply an ice pack to the outside of your face to help reduce swelling

  • Refrain from touching the extraction site with your tongue or fingers
  • Avoid drinking through a straw or swishing and spitting vigorously

  • Try not to blow your nose or sneeze forcefully

  • Do not rinse your mouth on the day of the surgery

  • Refrain from smoking or using tobacco products for several days following your extraction

  • Limit strenuous activities and relax as much as possible during the first 24 hours after your procedure; keep your head elevated

  • Stick to a soft diet for the first 48 hours to promote healing

Following these recommendations will support your recovery and minimize complications.
