Post-Implant Care Instructions

To support a smooth recovery and reduce the risk of complications following your implant placement, it is important to carefully follow these post-operative care instructions:

  • Do not rinse your mouth for the remainder of the day after your procedure. Starting the day after, rinse gently with warm salt water (½ teaspoon of salt in 8 oz. of water) every 2-3 hours for several days. Afterward, rinse after meals and at bedtime for two weeks.
  • Take prescribed medications, antibiotics, and mouth rinses exactly as directed. Use mild over-the-counter pain relievers such as Tylenol, Advil, or ibuprofen to alleviate discomfort.
  • Begin brushing your teeth the day after the procedure, but avoid the surgical site for several days to prevent irritation.
  • If a temporary crown was placed, avoid biting down on it until cleared by our dentist.
  • Refrain from wearing dentures, partials, or other oral appliances until permitted by your dentist.
  • Swelling is normal. For the first 48 hours, apply ice or cold compresses to the side of your face in 15-minute intervals. After 48 hours, switch to heat until the swelling subsides.
  • Use lip balm or Vaseline to keep your lips moist and prevent cracking.
  • Avoid operating machinery for at least 12 hours following your procedure.
  • Do not smoke or use tobacco products, as they can compromise the healing process and lead to implant failure.
  • If the cover screw or healing abutment becomes loose or falls out, contact our office immediately. Bring the component to your appointment for replacement.
  • If you use oral contraceptives and were prescribed antibiotics, use an alternative method of birth control during and until completing the antibiotics course.

If you have any concerns or questions about your recovery or post-operative care, please contact our office to speak with our team or schedule a follow-up appointment. Your healing and comfort are our priority.
